A Search for Light and Life: Reflections on the Impact of the Road to Freedom Youth Camp on Young People’s View of Transitional Justice

Author:Yu-Chieh Chang (Volunteer of Dr. Chen Wen-Chen Memorial Foundation / Graduated student, Master of Laws, Public Law Program, Soochow University)

Abstract:

The Dr. Chen Wen-Chen Memorial Foundation has been organizing The Road to Freedom-Youth Camp since 2008, recruiting young learners aged 16-25 every summer. Since 2021, the camp has also welcomed social professionals over the age of 26, providing opportunities to attend classes, visit places such as the Green Oasis and the Green Island Human Rights Memorial, where political victims were once detained, and exchange ideas with political victims. The camp also includes activities such as commemorative evenings and presentation of achievements to encourage participants from different parts of the country to communicate with each other about their ideas on transitional justice and the White Terror period.

Over the years, in addition to education and promotion of transitional justice, the camp has also empowered many human rights workers, established a network of relationships and communication between advocates, academia, and political victims of transitional justice, and influenced many young peoples’ understanding and views on transitional justice. After the camp, the bonds between young staff members continue to serve as a source of mutual support in daily life and in tackling human rights issues.

Although it is not easy to promote transitional justice in Taiwan, yet those who care about this issue will continue to work together to find a way out of the darkness and tell more people about what happened in the past.
