Abstract:
The two conflicts that have most profoundly influenced Taiwan’s destiny in modern times were the Pacific War from 1941 to 1945 and the Second Chinese Civil War from 1946 to 1949. Taiwanese soldiers in the Pacific War held the status of Japanese military personnel and dependents, while those in the Chinese Civil War served variously in the Nationalist and Communist armies.
This paper primarily introduces the history of Taiwanese veterans and the contributions of Hsu, Chao-Jung to the movement for veterans’ rights. It also discusses how the ‘ Taiwanese Veterans Association (TVA)’ and the ‘War and Peace Memorial Park and Theme Museum (WPMPTM)’ promote public awareness of war-related human rights through various activities. These efforts encourage public engagement in reflecting on and discussing the significance of this period in Taiwan’s modern era. Ultimately, such efforts aim to foster social consensus, heal war wounds, address unfinished aspects of transitional justice, and deepen a national sense of crisis.
