Political Violence and Memory Politics in the Name of Redemption: Reading Some People Need Killing: A Memoir of Murder in My Country

Author:Yi-yu Lai(PhD Candidate, Department of Anthropology, University of Hawai’i at Mānoa)

Abstract:

This paper examines the ramifications of the war on drugs during the Duterte administration (2016-2022) in the Philippines. It scrutinizes how the social dynamics and circumstances moulded by violence interact with ongoing discussions in Philippine society regarding memory, history, and their interpretations. Through analysing Patricia Evangelista’s memoir Some People Need Killing: A Memoir of Murder in My Country (2023) alongside other relevant works, this paper aims to contextualize the depicted cases within the broader framework of political violence in the Philippines. By doing so, it seeks to shed light on pivotal issues in the study of political violence in the Philippines and identify potential future research directions.
